Semiotics of Soft Cubes is an editioned sculpture featuring a crumpled paper drawing of a cube zipped inside a soft, sienna-tinted vinyl case. Too large to fit unaltered, the drawing must be compressed its ideal geometry yielding to material constraint of the pliable container.
The result is a meditation on how Platonic ideals must bend in order to exist. The soft vinyl form is able to hold its structure only through the resistance of the drawing within. Each element upholds the other: the supports the physical, the physical reshapes the conceptual. Their interdependence enacts a semiotic exchange, in which containment, distortion, and accommodation become signs of the real.
